EU quota utilization levels of Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan

In the first four months of 2007, Russia utilized 44 percent of the steel quota allocated to it by the European Union (EU), while Ukraine utilized 45 percent of its revised EU quota. On the other hand, Kazakhstan utilized only 1.21 percent of its allocation.

According to the latest statistics, Russia exported a total of 998,500 tons of steel products to the EU in the first four months of 2007. The quota allocated to Russia for 2007 is 2,273,000 tons.

Specifically, Russia used 53 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (490,000 of 931,000 allotted tons), 48 percent of its plate quota (93,000 of 195,000 allotted tons), 15 percent of its alloy sheet quota (15,300 of 100,000 allotted tons), ten percent of its beam quota (4,650 of 46,000 allotted tons), and 38 percent of its wire rod quota (66,700 of 177,000 allotted tons).

With regard to Ukraine, it exported a total of 449,850 tons of steel products to the EU in the first four months of 2007, filling 45 percent of its total quota of 1,004,500 tons.

When the figures are broken down, we see that Ukraine filled 34 percent of its coil quota (52,000 of 154,000 allotted tons), 51 percent of its heavy plate quota (182,000 of 357,000 allotted tons), 42 percent of its beam quota (13,000 of 30,750 allotted tons), and 45 percent of its wire rod quota (57,500 of 128,125 allotted tons).

Finally, Kazakhstan exported a total of 2,500 tons of steel products to the EU in the first four months of 2007, filling only 1.21 percent of its total quota of 205,000 tons.

Specifically, Kazakhstan filled 2.9 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (2,500 of 87,125 allotted tons), while it has not used its other flat rolled quota of 118,000 tons.
