According to the monthly statistics released by the Turkish Automotive Manufacturers' Association (OSD), in 2012 motor vehicle sales in Turkey totaled 817,620 units, falling by 10.2 percent as compared to 2011.
The contraction of the market resulted from the falling demand for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. In 2012, the market for passenger cars contracted by six percent to 556,280 units compared to 2011.
In 2012, Turkey's motor vehicle exports amounted to 745,354 units, falling by seven percent year on year, while its passenger car exports amounted to 412,991 units, falling also by seven percent compared to 2011. The revenue for these export sales reached $19.3 billion for total motor vehicle and component exports, falling by five percent, while the revenue from passenger car exports totaled $6 billion, down seven percent, both compared to 2011.
During last year, Turkey's commercial vehicle exports totaled 316,932 units, while its tractor exports amounted to 15,431 units, with a decrease of nine percent and an increase of 52 percent year on year respectively.
In 2012, Turkey's motor vehicle imports decreased by five percent, while its passenger car imports fell by one percent year on year, totaling 511,694 units and 409,676 units respectively.
On the other hand, in Turkey the capacity utilization rate in 2012 was 68 percent for the overall domestic motor vehicle industry, while it was 77 percent for tractors and 69 percent for light vehicles including passenger cars, pick-ups and minibuses.
