According to the monthly report released by the Turkish Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD), in October this year Turkey's motor vehicle output totaled 83,146 units, increasing by 3.5 percent year on year, but down 3.62 percent over the month of September. Meanwhile, in the month in question, the country's passenger car output increased slightly by 0.9 percent year on year, while recording a month-on-month drop of 9.51 percent.
In its report the OSD emphasized that the year-on-year increase in October production was driven by the base effect.
In October, the domestic vehicle sales amounted to 22,111 units, down 37.1 percent, due to the 30.1 percent decrease in sales in the domestic passenger car market which accounts for 65 percent of the total domestic market, all compared to October 2008. According to the report, demand in October contracted by 74 percent over September, due to the expiry of the Special Consumption Tax (OTV) reduction on September 30. Exports, however, totaled 68,357 units in October, increasing by 24.4 percent year on year. Passenger car exports accounted for 60 percent of total motor vehicle exports in the given month.
On the other hand, in the January-October period of the current year, Turkey's motor vehicle output and exports continued their contraction compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
In the period in question, Turkey's total motor vehicle output declined by 33.4 percent year on year to 699,141 units, total motor vehicle exports slid by 39.1 percent year on year to 503,660 units, while domestic motor vehicle sales amounted to 455,269 units, increasing slightly by 0.3 percent aided by the year-on-year increase of 12.1 percent in domestic passenger car sales, which was in turn driven by the OTV reduction in the March-September period of 2009.
In the first ten months of the year, commercial vehicle output regressed to 2004 levels, due to the 11 percent decrease in light commercial vehicle sales and the 47 percent drop in heavy commercial vehicle sales.
