In May this year, the Spanish industrial production index decreased by 5.4 percent year on year, while the seasonally adjusted index declined by 6.1 percent year on year. According to the revised figures provided by Spain National Statistics Institute (INE), in April the indexes respectively decreased by 8.3 percent and 8.2 percent.
In the January-May period, the Spanish industrial production index fell by 6.1 percent compared to the same period of 2011. In particular, durable consumer goods declined by 11.4 percent, non-durable consumer goods fell by 3.1 percent, capital goods were down by 11.7 percent and intermediate goods decreased by 7.4 percent, all year on year. The energy production index recorded the only positive year-on-year variation in January-May, up 0.1 percent.
The production index for base metals in May was down 9.2 percent, while it decreased by 10.4 percent in January-May. Meanwhile, the production index for metal products (except machinery and equipment) declined by 15.5 percent in May and by 17.7 percent in the first five months of the year.
