Sales surge for US automakers in August

The three major US automakers, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all reported significantly improved sales in August on Thursday.

General Motors Co. had total sales of 218,479 vehicles in August, an 18 percent increase compared to August 2010.

Chrysler Group LLC reported US sales of 130,119 units, a 31 percent jump year-on-year and the best August sales for the carmaker since 2007. Additionally, August marks the 17th consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains.

Ford Motor Company said August sales totaled 175,220 units in August--an 11 percent increase from August 2010.
