US auto sales soar in September

Total US auto sales in September were over 1 million units, a 2 percent increase from August, but a 10 percent increase from September of last year, but the US' three major automakers experienced significantly higher sales last month.

Auburn Hills, Michigan-based Chrysler Group said Monday that total sales were up 27 percent in September, representing the best September for the company since 2007. September also marked the 18th consecutive month of year-over-year gains. Units sold totaled 127,334 last month and retail sales alone surged 50 percent.

Detroit, Michigan-based General Motors Co. reported total sales of 207,145 vehicles in September, a 20 percent increase from September 2010, while Dearborn, Michigan-based Ford Motor Company touted a 9 percent increase in unit sales to 175,199. Ford's sales are also up 11.4 percent year-to-date over 2010.
