China's shipbuilding output down 24.3% in January-May

In the January-May period of the current year, the aggregate shipbuilding output in China amounted to 13.02 million deadweight tons (dwt), down 24.3 percent year on year, according to figures released by the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI).
In the given period, China's new ship orders amounted to 34.73 million dwt, up 108 percent year on year. As of the end of May, ship orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises totaled 150.47 million dwt, up 41.4 percent year on year and indicating an increase of 14.9 percent compared to the end of 2013.

In the January-May period, the aggregate shipbuilding output for export orders in China totaled 11.65 million dwt, down 17.7 percent year on year and accounting for 89.5 percent of the total shipbuilding output in China in the given period. Meanwhile, China's new ship export orders in the period in question amounted to 32.89 million dwt, up 167 percent year on year and constituting 94.7 percent of total new ship orders. As of the end of May, ship export orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises totaled 141.44 million dwt, up 62.5 percent year on year and constituting 94 percent of total ship orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises.
