Chilean’s Fabril's Society of Advancement reported that, on a seasonally-adjusted basis, the industrial output in January declined 8.2 percent in relation to production back in January of 2008.

“Industrial activity has been affected by the lack of external demand, the strong contraction in the construction sector, and the slowdown in domestic consumption,” said the entity.

The steel industry was the sector of industrial production which declined the most from last year, as it recorded the biggest drop in January 2009 over January 2008, of 54.2 percent.
