Turkish auto sales surpasses Europe in Q1

Turkey surpassed Europe in automobile sales in the first quarter of 2004. A total of 95'395 units were sold in Turkey during January-March 2004 period, up by 368.7% compared to the same period of last year. With these results, automobile sales in Turkey exceeded the sales in eight out of 15 European Union countries. There were lower sales in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Sweden than in Turkey. In the same period last year, Turkey was only able to sell more automobiles than Luxembourg. The total automobile sales in EU soared by 2.8% to 3.8 million units. The highest automobile sales were recorded in Germany with 765'304 units. The average increase in the first quarter of 2004 in the eight countries that will soon become EU members was 8.4%.
