Steel cargoes up 53 percent at Port of Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) announced Friday that the port handled 3,644,919 metric tons of cargo in 2010, compared to 3,107,067 metric tons of cargo handled in 2009.

The Port of Philadelphia handled 170,215 metric tons of cargo in 2010, a 53 percent surge over 2009, while handling 264,059 TEU's of containerized cargo last year, up from 222,000 TEU's the port handled in 2009. Non-containerized cargo volumes were up as well, increasing 32 percent from 840,876 metric tons handled in 2009 to the 1,108,329 metric tons of cargo the port handled last year.

The Port also handled 77,350 metric tons of automotive cargo (69,000 units) in 2010, compared to the 496 metric tons of the same cargo handled in 2009.
