Groundbreaking has been held for key projects in the city of Kunming in China's Yunnan Province in the first quarter of 2012, according to local media reports.

In particular, a project of Kunming Huaxin Metal Material with a cost of RMB 160 million ($25.38 million) aims to annually produce 350,000 mt of hot dip aluminum-zinc-silicon coated galvanized sheet and 250,000 mt of pre-painted galvanized iron (PPGI) sheet. Following commissioning, the project's business revenues are expected to reach RMB 80 million ($12.69 million).

There are only a small number of production facilities for color coated steel sheet and galvanized steel sheet in southwestern China. In particular, in Yunnan Province galvanized steel sheet/coil output totaled 3,000 mt in 2011, ranking the lowest among the provinces in China, while color coated steel sheet/coil output in Yunnan reached 58,000 mt in the given year, accounting for only one percent of total domestic output in China.
