Turkish Steel Exporters' Association (CIB) has announced that CIB chairman Namık Ekinci has met with Egyptian businessmen and Egypt’s trade and industry minister Tareq Qabi in Egypt to negotiate regarding problems in the steel sector.

During the meeting, which included discussions on Egypt’s trade protection measures, Mr. Ekinci stated that protective measures harm domestic producers and the domestic market, contrary to common belief. He referred to the problems caused by “unfair” antidumping (AD) duty and countervailing duty (CVD) investigations by Egypt affecting Turkish steel producers and requested the Egyptian authorities to accelerate the registration process within the scope of Egypt’s new import regulations, which require suppliers, including steel producers, to register with Egypt’s General Authority of Export and Import Control, thereby enabling them to be inspected by the Egyptian authorities.

Mr. Ekinci said that he was satisfied with the negotiations and was very hopeful about the outcomes to be made in the forthcoming period, and added that the Egyptian authorities were ready to resolve the problems through mutual dialogue and cooperation.
