According to market reports, the relevant Egyptian authorities have decided that Turkish rebar imports into Egypt have not caused material injury to Egypt's domestic steel industry; however, so far, no official notice has been received by the Turkish authorities on the issue.
In October last year, local Egyptian rebar producers requested an antidumping duty order investigation on steel imports from Turkey on the grounds that the domestic industry had been materially injured by such imports.
Egyptian Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade, Dr. Samir Alsayyad, has stated that, regarding the antidumping investigation, no sufficient evidence was found indicating material injury to the domestic industry caused by Turkish rebar imports. Therefore, the Egyptian government has decided to grant approval for rebar imports from Turkey to continue.
On the other hand, Egyptian producers are asking for the 10 percent import tax that was abolished with the free trade agreement signed between Egypt and Turkey in 2007 to be brought back into force. The Egyptian mills said that they would examine the ministry's decision and would go to court if they were not satisfied with the ministry's justification for its decision.
