The Russian steelmaker Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has confirmed to SteelOrbis that it plans to construct a new steel mill in the North American region which will primarily target the automobile industries of Central America.

The new mill will specialize in the production of hot rolled, cold rolled and galvanized steel from commercial quality steel, HSS and AHSS grades of steel. The output of the new plant will be used in the production of automobiles, white goods, as well as in the construction industry.

Currently, the project is in the final phase of preparation, and the decision on its implementation will be taken in the near future.

Commenting on the new plant's possible location, MMK's spokeswoman told SteelOrbis that the US state of Ohio is considered as the preferred location for the new plant. "We have evaluated this location as a very attractive one and highly value the interest of the state administration in our project", the MMK spokeswoman added. However, the final decision on whether to construct the new plant in this state has not yet been taken.

Furthermore, the MMK representative also confirmed that the company considers Quebec province in Canada as an alternative location for its North American steel plant.
