Mexican car output hits all-time high in 2011

In 2011, Mexican car output totaled 2.56 million units, increasing 13 percent compared to 2010 and up 21.6 percent compared to the pre-crisis year of 2008, according to the Mexican Association of the Automobile Industry (AMIA). The association noted that Mexican automotive industry set a record for production cars in 2011 amid growing exports to the US and market expansion in Latin America.

Mexican car exports, meanwhile, increased by 15.3 percent year on year in 2011 to 2.14 million units, constituting a new record for the sector, as stated by AMIA president Eduardo Solis at a press conference. Mr. Solis said that Mexico's record car output in 2011 was the result of its success in finding alternative export markets, such as in Latin America.

Despite the good data, Solis said there are warning signs of a possible slowdown in 2012 in the export destination markets in the sector.
