Data released by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) show that global crude steel production for September 2008 decreased 3.2 percent year on year to 108.4 million metric tons.
China is again the world's largest steel producing country with crude steel production of 39.614 million metric tons in September 2008, a decrease of 9.1 percent from a year earlier. Total crude steel production in the Asian region amounted to 60.446 million metric tons, down 5.1 percent on a year ago.
Germany produced 4.041 million metric tons of crude steel in September 2008, showing a decrease of 0.6 percent year on year. Italy produced 2.715 million metric tons in the month in question, marking an increase of 2.4 percent compared to September 2007. Production in the UK in September was 1.169 million metric tons, up 3.5 percent year on year. Total production in the EU-27 amounted to 17.415 million metric tons, up 0.9 percent compared to September 2007.
Production in Turkey in September this year stood at 2.166 million metric tons, an increase of 4.3 percent compared to September 2007.
Brazil's crude steel production in September 2008 rose five percent year on year to 3.010 million metric tons.
The US produced 7.860 million metric tons in September, registering a 1.3 percent decrease year on year.
