Global crude steel production for October 2008

Data released by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) show that global crude steel production for October 2008 decreased 12.4 percent year on year to 100.5 million metric tons.

China is again the world's largest steel producing country with crude steel production of 35.901 million metric tons in October 2008, a decrease of 17 percent from a year earlier. Total crude steel production in the Asian region amounted to 56.928 million metric tons, down 11.6 percent on a year ago.

Germany produced 3.877 million metric tons of crude steel in October 2008, showing a decrease of 7.7 percent year on year. Italy produced 2.555 million metric tons in the month in question, marking a decrease of 12.2 percent compared to October 2007. Production in the UK in October was 967,000 metric tons, down 12.9 percent year on year. Total production in the EU-27 amounted to 16.829 million metric tons, down 5.7 percent compared to October 2007.

Production in Turkey in October this year stood at 1.816 million metric tons, a decrease of 17.8 percent compared to October 2007. 

Brazil's crude steel production in October 2008 dropped 0.1 percent year on year to 2.897 million metric tons.

The US produced 7.056 million metric tons in October, registering a 16.8 percent decrease year on year.
