Euro area industrial output down 0.8% in Apr from Mar

In April this year, seasonally-adjusted industrial production fell by 0.8 percent in the euro area and by 0.4 percent in the EU-27, as compared with the previous month. In March, production fell by 0.1 percent and 0.2 percent month on month respectively.

Meanwhile, in April of the current year compared with April 2011, seasonally-adjusted industrial production decreased by 2.3 percent in the euro area and by 1.7 percent in the EU-27. These figures are released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

As compared to March, in April this year production of capital goods fell 2.6 percent in the euro area and by 1.8 percent in the EU-27, while intermediate goods declined by 1.2 percent in the euro area and by 0.9 percent in the EU-27. Meanwhile, durable consumer goods dropped by 0.9 percent in the euro area, but rose by 0.6 percent in the EU-27.

Among the member states for which data are available, in April as compared to March industrial production rose in 16 states, fell in six and remained stable in the United Kingdom. The highest increases were registered in the Netherlands (+2.9%), in Poland (+2.3%) and in Malta (+1.9%), while the largest decreases were in Portugal (-6.5%), Germany (-2.0%) and Italy (-1.9%).

As compared to the same month of 2011, in April this year production of capital goods declined by 0.3 percent in the euro area, but rose by 0.4 percent in the EU-27, intermediate goods fell by 4.5 percent and 3.5 percent respectively, durable consumer goods fell by 6.2 percent in the euro area and by 4.5 percent in the EU-27, while production of energy grew by 3.3 percent in the euro area and by 1.3 percent in the EU-27.

Among the member states for which data are available, in April this year as compared to April 2011 industrial production rose in 12 states and fell in 11. The highest increases were registered in Slovakia (+10.9%), in Lithuania (+6.9%) and in the Netherlands (+4.7%), and the largest decreases were seen in Italy (-9.2%), in Spain (-8.3%) and in Portugal (-7.6%).
