Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, a subsidiary of Russian mining and steel producing group Mechel, has carried out the hot run tests of the new vacuum degasser at its electro-smelting shop No. 6, with which they plan to treat about 650,000 mt of steel per year.
The new vacuum degasser is expected to significantly improve the quality of steel and the properties of finished steel products produced by Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant.
The project was implemented within the framework of a radical reconstruction of the plant's electro-smelting shop No. 6, which also includes the reconstruction of the continuous caster No. 2 and the construction of the ladle-furnace No. 2.
As a result of the shop's reconstruction, Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant aims to increase its slab output to up to 1.2 million mt per year and also to expand its product range. The new product range of the plant's electro-smelting shop No. 6 will include extra-low-carbon steel, electro-technical steel, high-quality construction and corrosion resistant steel grades, while its new size range will include slabs of 250 mm thickness, in addition to the current size of 170 mm thickness.
