Canadian housing starts rise in December

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) announced Tuesday that housing starts jumped from 185,600 units in November to 200,200 units in December.

As usual, urban starts represented the majority of overall housing starts, totaling 181,900 units in December--a 10.1 percent increase compared to November. Multiple urban starts were up by 14.5 percent to 111,300 units, while urban single starts increased by 3.8 percent in December to 70,600 units.

Rural starts were about 18,300 units in December, down from 22,200 units in November.
