Canadian housing starts fall in January

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) announced Wednesday that housing starts fell from 199,900 units in December 2011 to 197,900 units in January 2012.

Urban starts for the month of January declined 2.8 percent to 176,600 units. Multiple urban starts were up by 0.4 percent to 111,700 units, while urban single starts decreased by 7.8 percent in January to 64,900 units.

Rural starts were about 21,300 units in January, up from 18, 300 units in December.
