Brazil’s industrial output down 8.9 percent in July

Brazil industrial output in July this year declined 1.5 percent month on month and by 8.9 percent year on year, according to figures released this week by the nation’s Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The IBGE said the country’s industrial production in the January-July period diminished by 6.6 percent year on year, while production in the latest 12 months decreased by 5.3 percent year on year.

According to the IBGE, among the 10 sectors that increased production this month, the best performance was registered by the machine and equipment sector with an increase of 6.5 percent month on month. Other important positive impacts were seen in motor vehicles and trailers with a 1.4 percent increase and in computers, electronic and optical products with a 3.2 percent rise in output, both on month-on-month basis. 

In the year-on-year comparison, the machine and equipment sector saw a 15.1 percent decrease in output, while output of the basic metals sector declined by 7.9 percent.
