BMZ’s steel output declines by 2.7 percent in January-April

In January-April 2010, Byelorussian Iron and Steel Works (BMZ) registered a 2.7 percent decrease year on year in its crude steel output to 838,500 mt.
Accordingly, during the period in question, BMZ's rolled steel product output went down by 2.5 percent year on year to 696,100 mt, while its pipe production increased by 2.3 times year on year to 30,500 mt. The plant also produced 30,500 mt of metal cord - down 1.5 percent, and 60,300 mt of steel wire - up 29.2 percent, both compared to January-April 2009.
Meanwhile, in the first four months of this year BMZ's sales of rolled steel products went down by 7.8 percent to 494,100 mt, while sales of pipes increased by 2.8 times to 34,300 mt, both compared to the same period last year. The plant also sold 29,200 mt of metal cord - up 1.8 times, and 60,700 mt of wire - up 1.7 times, both compared to January-April 2009. BMZ's total proceeds from sales in January-April 2010 increased by 37.7 percent year on year to about $436 million.
During the first four months of the current year, BMZ increased its export sales by 27.5 percent year on year to $353 million. Of BMZ's overall sales, the share of exports amounted to about 85 percent, with more than 70 percent of export supplies being to non-CIS countries.
