ArcelorMittal USA shuts down Georgetown wire rod mill due to oil spill

ArcelorMittal USA has shut down its wire rod mill in Georgetown, South Carolina due to an oil spill affecting the Sampit River, according to media reports.
 
An oil spill was detected in the Sampit River on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 19, and ArcelorMittal decided to halt operations at the wire rod mill after it turned out to be the source of the spill.
 
The Georgetown mill operates one electric arc furnace with an annual capacity of 600,000 mt of liquid steel and it has an annual wire rod output capacity of 750,000 mt. The wire rod mill serves the construction, automotive, industrial and converters markets.
