Germany-based stainless flat steel producer ThyssenKrupp Nirosta announced on March 3, that it has supplied Nirosta 4318 stainless steel for the manufacture of bodies of a new generation of metro trains, namely DT5, which will enter service in Hamburg, Germany.
According to Wolfgang Gebel from ThyssenKrupp Nirosta technical customer support, with its high yield strength and good corrosion resistance, Nicosta 4318 is ideal for lightweight construction. "Even thin panels display high strength and rigidity," Mr. Gebel said.
Meanwhile, ThyssenKrupp Nirosta states that it has been strengthening its global credentials in the rail transit industry. Stainless steel from ThyssenKrupp Nirosta has been used in a variety of projects for many years. Examples include Basel, where a total of 60 new trams of type ‘Tango' are to be deployed in the next ten years, the Bombardier cars for the metro in New Delhi, India, and the double-deck cars for Deutsche Bahn.
