Local Chinese steel pipe market remains sluggish amid ongoing offseason

The local Chinese steel pipe market has mostly followed a stable trend in the past seven days, though with some slight downticks also seen in prices. 

As of August 20, China's three main steel markets, i.e., Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing, the average price of 20# (GB/T8162-1999) grade 108 mm x 4.5 mm seamless pipe now stands at $477/mt, with 20# (GB/T8163-1999) grade 219 mm x 6 mm seamless pipe at $484/mt. Meanwhile, on the same date, Q195-215 grade 48 mm x 3.25 mm welded pipe and Q215-235 grade 114 mm x 3.75 mm welded pipe prices in the above markets are standing at $389/mt and $392/mt respectively. All the above prices include 17 percent VAT.

The Chinese domestic seamless pipe market has mostly moved on a sideways trend in the past week, though with some minor decreases in prices also observed. Overall trading activity has remained sluggish amid weak downstream demand, while inventories in the market are on the low side. Upstream billet prices have been following a stable trend. Traders have reduced the prices of some seamless pipe products in order to attract sales. For the coming week, domestic seamless pipe prices are expected to continue their mainly stable trend.
 
The local Chinese welded pipe market has been following a similar trend to that seen in the seamless pipe market, mostly sideways with some downticks. Trading activity has remained slack due to the ongoing summer offseason. Prices of steel strip have softened., while downstream buyers of welded pipes have been maintaining a wait-and-see stance. The slight declines in prices of some welded pipe products constituted a correction following previous price increases which had not been supported by any improvement in demand. As for the coming week, it is believed that some more slight declines in prices may be witnessed.
