The local Chinese steel pipe market has indicated a slight downtrend during the past week.
As of June 8, in China's three main steel markets, i.e., Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing, the average price of 20# (GB/T8162-1999) grade 108 mm x 4.5 mm seamless pipe now stands at $611/mt (RMB 4,150/mt), with 20# (GB/T8163-1999) grade 219 mm x 6 mm seamless pipe at $633/mt (RMB 4,300/mt). Meanwhile, on the same date, Q195-215 grade 48 mm x 3.25 mm welded pipe and Q215-235 grade 114 mm x 3.75 mm welded pipe prices in the above markets are standing at $535/mt (RMB 3,630/mt) and $529/mt (RMB 3,593/mt) respectively. All the above prices include 17 percent VAT.
The Chinese domestic seamless pipe market has moved on a soft trend during the past seven days against the backdrop of reductions in billet prices. Overall trading activity is at low levels, though supply in the market is also on the low side. As for the coming week, it is thought that domestic seamless pipe prices may edge down slightly.
The local Chinese welded pipe market has followed a slight downtrend in the past week, while overall trading activity is at low levels. Declines in ferrous metals futures prices in China resulted in weaker support for the welded pipe market. Amid poor sentiment, most downstream users are reluctant to conclude purchases. Approaching the traditional offseason amid hotter weather conditions, demand is expected to remain sluggish. As for the week ahead, it is thought that domestic welded pipe prices in China may soften further.
