Activity remains lackluster in local Chinese steel pipe market

The local Chinese steel pipe market has for the most part followed a slight downtrend in the past week. 

 

As of November 5, in China's three main steel markets, i.e., Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing, the average price of 20# (GB/T8162-1999) grade 108 mm x 4.5 mm seamless pipe now stands at $445/mt, with 20# (GB/T8163-1999) grade 219 mm x 6 mm seamless pipe at $453/mt. Meanwhile, on the same date, Q195-215 grade 48 mm x 3.25 mm welded pipe and Q215-235 grade 114 mm x 3.75 mm welded pipe prices in the above markets are standing at $341/mt and $344/mt respectively. All the above prices include 17 percent VAT.

 

Average prices in the local Chinese seamless pipe market have softened slightly in the past seven days, while trading activity has remained weak. Some traders have reduced their prices in line with the downtrend of billet prices, though many traders have been seeking to keep their prices stable since their profit margins are already very small. At present, trading activity appears unlikely to improve. As for the coming week, it is believed that the local seamless pipe market will indicate a slight downward movement. 

The Chinese domestic welded pipe market has moved on a downward trend in the past week. Demand in the market remains very low, especially as the weather is getting colder. Meanwhile, upstream steel strip prices have softened and, as a result, most welded pipe traders have chosen to reduce their prices by small margins. As for the week ahead, no upward movement is foreseen for welded pipe prices given the weakness of demand.
