In the local Italian scrap market, price levels have decreased in the last two weeks by €5-20/mt, and should continue decreasing at least until the end of the month, as predicted in the monthly market analysis of Italian scrap consumers association Nuovo Campsider. At present, transaction prices and volumes vary considerably from one customer to another, but the general trend is well-defined: by the end of February scrap quotations are likely to return to early December levels.

The freezing cold and heavy snowfalls all across the country are obstructing scrap collection and shipments (both local and import). One market player stated that a northern Italian steel producer is still waiting for a large order of ex-Germany scrap which had been booked during January and also that ex-CIS pig iron and steel scrap cargos are facing great trouble in navigation from the Black Sea due to freezing conditions.
As already reported by SteelOrbis, prices of premium quality scrap in Italy have been decreasing, and are down by as much as €20/mt compared to the last market analysis, while demoliton and shredded scrap quotations have declined by as much as €5-15/mt.
According to steel producers, finished product demand is lackluster and the scrap price trend for February is clearly in a downward direction.
