Higher coke prices accepted in local Chinese market, pushing up export prices

An increase of RMB 110/mt in local coke prices in China has finally been accepted by steel mills for sales starting from September 20 and market sources expect another round of hikes next week. Limited supply together with high coking coal prices and improving demand have been the main reasons for this.

Following the increase in the local market, Chinese suppliers have started to target a minimum of $330-340/mt FOB for CSR65 coke, versus $322-327/mt FOB last week. This has also followed a deal for 40,000 mt for ex-Indonesia coke at $335-340/mt FOB early this week.

The last ex-Australia coking coal deal was for 35,000 mt of premium mid-volatile material at $320/mt FOB for October laycan, done yesterday, September 20, reflecting that some Indian buyers may be interested in coke imports with such a narrow price gap with Australian coking coal.
