During the week ending September 29, domestic billet prices in China have indicated a decreasing trend, while transaction activity in the overall market has been a bit better than in the previous week, though remaining at low levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
Ahead of the National Day Holiday (October 1-7), some downstream users have increased their purchases of semi-finished steel to meet demand during the holiday period. At the same time, sellers’ attempts to increase offer prices for semi-finished steel have failed due to the prevailing caution in the market. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market are unlikely to indicate a rebound in the coming week as the finished steel market in China has not seen any significant improvement during the traditional peak season for business in September.
