Minor fluctuations in local Chinese semi-finished steel market

During the week ending April 28, domestic semi-finished steel prices in China have mostly indicated minor increases or decreases depending on the region, though some regions have also seen stable price movement, while transaction activity in the overall market is at decent levels.

During the given week, the domestic finished steel markets have continued to be characterized by weakness and so they have not provided any significant support for semi-finished steel prices. Some market participants think that the rebound in iron ore prices still requires further observation and so sharp rises in semi-finished steel prices would not be accepted by purchasers. Recently, the profitability of semi-finished steel producers has indicated a certain improvement and this has encouraged producers to increase their semi-finished steel supplies to the market, exerting a negative impact on semi-finished steel prices. It is expected that domestic semi-finished steel prices in China will move sideways in the coming week.
