Infrastructure demand not yet apparent in Mexican beam prices

Prices for domestic Mexican steel beam IPR (ASTM-A6) increased US$12/mt during the last two weeks to reach US$880/mt ex-mill.  Meanwhile, the price of steel beam I (ASTM-A36) dropped US$15/mt down to the level of US$859/mt ex-mill.  Although the price trend for beams is mixed, sources look forward to a demand boost from the National Infrastructure Program, which is designed to turn Mexico into a "global logistics hub with high added value."

The plan has three objectives: developing a logistics connectivity to reduce transportation costs; improve road safety and develop activities that increase value; and to promote a balanced regional development plan to improve the quality of life for Mexicans.

To achieve these objectives, the federal government has set five plans of action: build an infrastructure backbone network that is secure, complete and in good condition; connect all regions including remote and near-remote communities; resume passenger rail transport and encourage greater use of freight trains; build four world-class ports; and achieve a better service, cost and frequency of air transport.
