During the week ending June 16, domestic semi-finished steel prices in China have indicated a downtrend in terms of billet prices, though slab prices have moved sideways, while transaction activity in the overall market has been slack. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, the ongoing declines in domestic finished steel prices have exerted a negative impact on semi-finished steel prices in China, with Chinese semi-finished steel producers having to lower their offer prices. Meanwhile, demand for semi-finished steel has been slack. In addition, iron ore prices, after a temporary rebound, will likely move down, which will slacken support for semi-finished steel prices. It is expected that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will continue their downtrend in the coming week.
