Some US domestic mills may have rolled out an “immediate” $2.00-$3.00 cwt. ($44-$66/mt or $40-$60/nt) price increase on hot dipped galvanized (HDG), the question remains about how much, if any, of that will stick. The previous expectation was that prices could tick down alongside a forecasted decrease for US domestic scrap prices (with the expectation that this could trickle down to most flats products), but HDG mills seem to have drawn their proverbial line in the sand. Although few, if any, believe the price increase will actually gain traction, the general consensus it that it was more to establish a market “floor” and to prevent any additional price erosion moving forward.
