The most commonly heard spot price transaction range for base price US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) has softened by $2.50 cwt. ($55/mt or $50/nt) on the bottom end, and by $1.50 cwt. ($33/mt or $30/nt) on the top end since our last report a week ago, which brings the current average spot price transaction range to $38-$40 cwt. ($838-$882/mt or $760-$800/nt), ex-mill, although deals up to $1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt) below this range continue to be available to volume buyers.
This trend, however, could soon reverse.
On Friday California Steel Industries announced they’d be raising HDG prices by $1.50 cwt. ($33/mt or $30/nt) effective with all new orders. Nucor Sheet Mill group echoed that announcement earlier today.
Neither mill announced new minimum base pricing for US HDG.
It’s believed that in light of the Section 232 investigation findings announcement, which is expected to come by the end of the month, that the rest of the US flat rolled steel mills will soon announce price increases, as well.
