The most commonly heard spot price transaction ranges for US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) and Galvalume coil have softened by $0.50 cwt. ($11/mt or $10/nt) on the top end since our last report a week ago; the trend is largely tied to lead times, which many customers report “are shorter than the mills had been quoting.”
Today’s current average transaction range for domestic, base-price HDG coil is being heard at $41.00-$42.50 cwt. ($904-$937/mt or $820-$850/nt), ex-Midwest mill. Buyers say they believe the softness in prices is due to the “fast and furious price gains that came after mills announced five back-to-back price increases. People bought when they saw prices going up, inventories topped out and once everyone was stocked, buyers stepped back, lead times softened and mills are became more open to negotiating on price.”
