The most commonly reported spot price range for US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) and Galvalume coil may be unchanged since our last report a week ago but sources close to SteelOrbis say that transaction prices for smaller tonnages are firming within the current range, which continues to hold at approximately $25.00-$27.00 cwt. ($551-$595/mt or $500-$540/nt), ex-Midwest mill.
“More and more deals are taking place at the higher end of this range but the big buyers are still paying closer to the bottom,” one source confirmed.
Order activity has continued to remain steady, other sources said, but “everyone is still doing their best to manage inventory levels” due to concern that March scrap prices could start to lose ground. “Customers are worried that if scrap prices start to falter again in March that we could see renewed weakness in flat rolled steel prices.”
