The most commonly heard spot price transaction range for US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) has widened by $1.00 cwt. on the low end since our last report a week ago, which brings the current average transaction range to $41.50-$43.50 cwt. ($915-$959/mt or $830-$870/nt), ex-mill.
However, some sources close to SteelOrbis have indicated that volume buyers are able to book deals slightly below this range.
Current US HDG lead times are trending between six to eight weeks, although some SteelOrbis sources say they’ve heard lead times are “as much as 10 weeks out depending on the mill.”
And while some attribute the price adjustment to the downtrend in US scrap prices this month, others feel that when prices were on an uptrend, “the market firmed too much too fast,” adding that mills’ price increases were “not so much demand based. It was definitely supply based,” another source added. “The market peaked and now we’re seeing some pricing adjustments.”
