Stable movement in local Chinese semi-finished steel market

During the week ending May 12, domestic semi-finished steel prices in China have indicated a stable trend, while transaction activity in the overall market has been at decent levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.

During the given week, import iron ore prices have rebounded, exerting a positive impact on domestic semi-finished steel prices. Steelmakers' semi-finished steel sales have been performing well and so they have been unwilling to lower their prices. However, downstream users are still seeking reductions in semi-finished steel prices. It is expected that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will move sideways in the coming week.
