Nickel prices have continued their downtrend over the past week following the fluctuations recorded in the last two weeks. On May 26, nickel prices were at $19,600/mt at London Metal Exchange (LME), while as of yesterday, June 5, they have softened to $19,000/mt. Market sources state that the downtrending nickel prices have impact stainless steel prices in the Chinese domestic market.
Meanwhile, import stainless steel offers to Turkey have not been affected. Ex-China offers for prime quality ready stock 304/2B stainless steel CRC of 2.0 mm thickness have remained unchanged since last week and are now ranging at $2,900-3,000/mt CFR Turkey. Ex-Taiwan offers for the same product are at $3,100-3,200/mt CFR, following the price increase announced by YUSCO. Market sources report that market players, in particular, find the Taiwanese offers to be on the high side, considering the eight percent import tax. Ex-China offers are expected to decrease below $2,900/mt CFR Turkey if nickel prices continue to move down.
