Demand still poor in local Chinese steel plate market

During the week ending August 31, steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market have mostly continued their declining trend, with just shipbuilding plate prices remaining stable, while overall transaction activity in the market is still on the slack side. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the tables below. 

  

During the given week, since demand is at low levels, traders have lowered their prices in a bid to improve their sales, while steelmakers have also reduced their prices amid difficulties in attracting orders. Meanwhile, current inventory levels in the market are at comparatively low levels, which provides a certain degree of support for steel plate prices, though the recent slump in the Chinese stock market has contributed to uncertainty in the finished steel markets. It is expected that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will edge down slightly in the coming week.
