During the week ending October 24, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have indicated a rising trend, while transaction activity in the overall market is at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
During the given week, inventory levels of steel plate in the domestic market have declined, providing support for steel plate prices. In particular, some thick specifications of steel plate are in short supply. At the same time, coke futures prices in China have continued to rise, exerting a positive impact on ferrous metal futures prices and pushing up steelmakers' costs. However, amid the rising movement of steel plate prices, downstream users have started to maintain a wait-and-see stance and so market activity has slackened to some extent. As the end of the month is approaching, some traders may experience tight liquidity and reduce prices in order to increase sales and bring in cash. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will move sideways or indicate a slight downtrend in the coming week.
