Turkish automotive sector continues to beat record

Turkey's total automotive sales and passenger car sales decreased by 25% and 30% respectively in June compared to previous month as Council of Ministers decided to cut scrap discount on cars to TL 2.25 billion in May. However, June automobile sales amounted to 37'674 units, up by 130.7% compared to 16'329 units recorded in the same period of last year. Sales of domestic and imported cars increased to their highest level with 235'675 units in the first six months of 2004, according to data provided by Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD). Automobile production also soared by 77% to a record level of 226'954 units. This reflects the revival in domestic demand with rising consumer confidence, lower inflation and interest rates. In the first six months, the production of motor vehicles reached 406'420 units, up by 77% compared to 230'122 units recorded in the same period of last year. Motor vehicle exports were recorded as 238'158 units in the first six months of the year. This figure indicates a 45% rise compared to 164'307 units registered in the same period of last year. Automobile exports also surged by 51% to 147'222 units from 97'772 units. Light vehicle exports amounted to 234'971 units in Jan-Jun 2004 period. Renault exported 65'928 units of automobile, Ford Otosan 59'548 units of light commercial vehicle, Toyota 53'601 units of automobile and Tofas 20'811 units of automobile and 21'306 units of light commercial vehicle. Light vehicle exports jumped by 46% compared to the same period of last year.
