Capesize (Atlantic and Pacific)

Capesize market started the week quietly, but went somehow frenetic during the middle part with Western Australia charterers all in the market chasing tonnage. Rates, consequently, went quickly up from low $10/mt to high $11 and then settled at $11. Intra-day volatility was really high as well on the other key routes. Voyage out of Brazil to China went from mid $26/mt to high $27 for early April dates. Atlantic market was relatively quiet with TransAtlantic round voyage in the mid $20s, fronthaul from North Continent was quiet as well as the period market.

Panamax (Atlantic and Pacific)

TransAtlantic market remained flat most of the week with the tonnage list for spot positions getting longer day by day. Some support came from new fresh cargoes, but was not enough. USG was quiet at around $11,500/d + 150,000 bb for redely Skaw/Passero. ECSAm was around $12,500/d + 250,000 bb for redely Med. Fronthaul was more active mostly from Baltic and US EC where fixtures were in the $19,000/d. ECSAm grains softened a bit at levels around $16,000/d + 600,000 for the first half of April dates. FEast hold at levels similar to the previous week with rates around $11,000/d for Indo and Australia RVs; NoPac was around $12,000/d. Not much activity for period business, but there are still interests for short period at around $14/14,500/d.

Handy (Far East/Pacific)

Although the list of fixtures was shorter, demand for spot Coal ex Indonesia was good and the fixtures were done at levels similar to the previous week. A 56,000 dwt agreed $11,000/d basis dely S Korea redely EC India, a 53,600 dwt with better consumptions achieved $15,500/d basis dely Spore and a 48,000 dwt got $8,000/d basis dely EC India for a RV. On the trade to China a 46,000 dwt got $12,250/d basis dely loading port. Short period was agreed at steady rates: a 58,000 dwt got $14,900/d basis dely S Korea for 5/7 months and a 35,000 dwt was fixed at $11,500/d basis dely N China for 4/6 months. For Handysize a 28,000 dwt got $9,500/d basis dely Spore to carry grains from Australia to Philippines.

Handy (North Europe/Mediterranean)

A few 33/34,000 dwt were fixed from N Europe for backhaul business at very low rates. Activity from this area was slow throughout the entire week. No fixtures were reported from BSea to N Africa despite grain exports went on at slightly firmer rates. From Canakkale a 16 years lady 45,700 dwt achieved $12,750/d for 4/6 months period and redely Atlantic. A standard Supra achieved $20,000/d for a trip via BSea to PG with steels.

Handy (USA/N.Atlantic/Lakes/S.America)

Activity improved on the trade lane between USG and FEast resulting in a large number of fixtures at higher and higher rates. At the beginning of the week levels around $22,500/d were reported, by the middle $25,000/d. Actually at the end of the week a 53,000 dwt was reported at $21,000/d, but the unit burns around 6 tons more of bunker than the average. TransAtlantic trade was less active, a 56,000 dwt agreed $14,000/d to Brazil and a 58,000 dwt got $17,850/d for a trip to Turkey with Petcoke. Smaller Handies were reported fixed on TransAtlantic trades at rates proportionally higher than Supramax. Activity was good also from S America at higher rates: a 56,000 dwt got $19,000/d basis dely S Brazil via Aqaba and redely E Med, a 52,000 dwt got $14,100/d basis dely N Brazil for a trip to S Brazil and Argentina to Continent. Handies performed even better than in Cont with a 28,000 dwt getting $14,250/d basis dely Brazil via Argentina to Cont.

Handy (Indian Ocean/South Africa)

Little demand and scarce news available from the area. A 53,600 dwt was booked at an unexciting $12,750/d fro 3/5 months period redely ww. Supramax were rumoured to be worth around $10,5/11,000/d for trips from WC India to China. Exports from S Africa were so small that tonnage open Bengal Bay started to ballast for cargoes ex Indo.
