Capesize (Atlantic and Pacific)

The Capesize market was still under pressure except for a small recovery registered at the end of the week. On the Pacific side all the majors were in the market to secure tonnage, but rates slipped below $5/mt with $4.95/mt agreed several times for ETAs 20 June onwards and timecharter rates agreed in the region of $5,000/d for similar dates. The Saldanha Bay/Qingdao was agreed at lower levels around $7.30/mt for early July dates. Fronthaul rates from Brazil went down as well with $10.20/$10.15/mt agreed for end June dates. In the Atlantic basin a pretty quiet week was registered with a few fixtures reported. Some activity was registered from Brazil to UKC at $5.25/mt, whilst the standard C7 route from Bolivar to Rotterdam was done at $5.65/mt at the beginning of the week and then an improved $6.05/mt was reported done end. Better numbers were seen for B Sea/F East trades with a good $15,500/d agreed for dely aps Yuzhny for a TCT via B Sea to F East (via Suez). Period activity was very quiet, although $10,000/d was agreed for one year period bss dely China ppt.

Panamax (Atlantic and Pacific)

Last week positive news were registered on the Atlantic market with a lack of available vessels and fresh requirements, mainly from ECSAm. Trades from ECSAm to F East were fixed at over $12,500/d + $250.000 bss aps, but owners mainly fixed basis passing Cape of Good Hope with rates around $9,000/d + $250.000 bb, or basis dop Cont/W Med; on Friday a nice LME was fixed at $12,500/d bss dop Amsterdam. TransAtlantic RV was agreed around $7,000/d for vessels open Passero with redelivery Med and a tick less with redelivery Continent. After a quiet Monday, the Pacific basin showed some interesting activity with rates that increased also due to the possibility to ballast to ECSAm grains. Indo RV was fixed close to $5,000/d on good units. NoPac was agreed at a level near $5,500/d on standard Panamax and Australian RV was fixed around $5,000/d level bss dop China delivery. Some activity was registered on period with numbers for a 4/6 months contract around $6,500/$6,750/d on a LME. 1 year duration can be evaluated between $7,250/d and $7,500/d.

Handy (Far East/Pacific)

Despite charterers resistance, reported fixtures improved and the fresh optimism led to greater interest for period deals. A couple of 63,000 dwt fancy Ultramax were reported fixed: the first one for a year duration was done at 113% of the BSI-TC basis delivery Singapore, and the other one done for 4/6 months dely CJK at $8,500/d. Spot deals registered the highest rates on Supramax for Indonesia/India trades, where a non-fancy 56,000 dwt booked a very good $9,000/d bss delivery Singapore and a fancier 57,800 dwt bss delivery back in EC India was fixed at $5,500/d. On the nickel ore run from Philippines to China another fancy Ultramax did a firm $9,700/d with delivery CJK. The improving trend affected also the Handysize with a 28,000 dwt fixed at $5,000/d basis dely Indonesia for a trip via Australia to Spore/Jpn. The deal was followed by a 32,000 dwt fixed at a much better $7,500/d basis dely China to perform a trip via Japan to Australia.

Handy (North Europe/Mediterranean)

Very slow demand loading in Cont lead to a lack of reported fixture. A little more activity was seen from the E Med/BSea range, but confirmed that the market in this area kept quite lousy for owners. A 19 years old 45,000 dwt got only $3,000/d for a trip to USG basis dely E Med and a 53,000 dwt was reported at just $7,100/d basis dely aps BSea for a trip to E Africa. From same area a 57,900 dwt got $8,500/d for a trip to F East.

Handy (USA/N.Atlantic/Lakes/S.America)

The slow start from Atlantic Americas was hiding a considerable increase of the spot chartering demand both for Supramax and Handysize that positively influenced almost all the trades. Amongst a large amount of reported deals concluded at firmer rates, a non-fancy 56,000 dwt was booked at $10,750/d for an Argentina/W Med grain run. From the same loading area a similar type agreed a good $10,500/d + $160,000 bb for a trip to East and a 53,000 sized fixed $10,500/d from Brazil to N Europe. Out of the USG a 55,000 dwt was fixed at $12,900/d for a trade to F East and unconfirmed rumours reported that a fancier type fetched over $14,000/d to the same destination. From same area a 56,500 dwt was done at $12,000/d for a trade to Finland.

Handy (Indian Ocean/South Africa)

Good activity was registered also from this area, especially due to additional Supramax chartering interest. A 55,700 dwt agreed a WC India RV via MEG at a good $7,000/d. Two fancy Ultramax booked a low $5,000/d dop WC India via S Africa to the F East and a 53,000 size was fixed at a fine $10,500/d plus $120,000 bb aps S Africa to Spore/Japan range.
