Capesize (Atlantic and Pacific)

It was a positive week for Capesize with gains on all major routes; the iron ore trade from Brazil to China was the one that registered the strongest improvement with a gain of over $0.50/mt compared to the previous week. The Tubarao/Qingdao route settled at $9.75/mt showing returns close to $9,000/d for modern eco-type vessels open in China. Also South Africa to China trade registered substantial improvements with the Saldanha Bay/Qingdao closing the week in the mid $7’s/mt. Miners and operators from West Australia to China had to agree up to $4.80/mt to secure tonnage for ETA 10/12 September also considering the poor draft conditions for those dates out of Dampier. The Atlantic market kept on relatively quiet and the key route Bolivar/Rotterdam settled below $5/mt.

Panamax (Atlantic and Pacific)

The market kept a slow pace throughout past week with Kamsarmax vessels fixing ECSAm to F East at $7,500/d + $250,000 bb, while levels for trips to Continent on a 82,000 dwt were seen at around $7,500/d basis ECSAm delivery. In the USG area levels have also shown a reduction in the daily hire with Kamsarmax fixing $10,500/d basis Gibraltar for trips via USG to Far East passing Cape of Good Hope and same levels were also reported on a 82,000 dwt basis Montoir for similar direction via USG. Handy (Far East/Pacific)

Very good activity in these waters and a very high number of reported fixtures that showed improving rates despite the amount of Supramax tonnage available on prompt position. Tighter supply of prompt tonnage in USG pushed TC levels higher and there are rumors that there were p&c deals done at higher rates. A fancy 58,000 dwt was fixed at the beginning of the week at $15,000/d to WCSAm, then a similar unit got $17,000/d for a similar trip. A 38,000 dwt was fixed at $6,750/d from Recalada to lower Baltic.

Only a few vessels were reported fixed at unattractive levels in these waters.
