Steel demand in Turkey is expected to grow by 7.6 percent this year to reach 30.6 million metric tons, according to the presentation made by Hans Jürgen Kerkhoff, chairman of the Economics Committee of worldsteel (World Steel Association), during the 47th annual meeting of the association held in Sao Paulo on October 7. Despite the lower steel production so far this year in Turkey, mostly due to the contraction in its export markets, huge government projects are providing supporting for steel demand in Turkey, said Mr. Kerkhoff.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, Turkey's crude steel output in the first eight months of the current year showed a decrease of 5.4 percent year on year to 22.8 million metric tons.

According to worldsteel figures, Turkish steel demand is forecast to grow further by 5.2 percent in 2014 to reach 32.2 million metric tons.
