World crude steel output down 5.1 percent in May

Global crude steel production in May this year decreased by 5.1 percent year on year and by 0.2 percent month on month to 161.6 million mt, according to the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

In the January-May period this year, global crude steel production decreased by 1.2 percent year on year to 786.0 million mt.  

In May, crude steel output in Asia amounted to 119.5 million mt, down 6.0 percent, with China’s output at 90.1 million mt, down 7.3 percent, with 7.6 million mt produced by Japan, decreasing by 5.2 percent, 11.2 million mt produced by India, rising by 4.1 percent, and 5.8 million mt produced by South Korea, moving down by 0.1 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis.  

EU-27 countries produced 11.6 million mt of crude steel in May, down by 11.2 percent year on year. In the given period, Germany’s estimated output amounted to 3.2 million mt, up 0.2 percent year on year.  

Turkey produced 2.9 million mt of crude steel in May with a 10.4 percent decrease compared to the same month in the previous year. The CIS registered a crude steel output of 7.9 million mt, advancing by 11.5 percent on year-on-year basis, with Russia’s estimated output at 6.8 million mt, up 8.8 percent year on year.  

In North America, in May, crude steel output totaled 9.6 million mt, falling by 3.7 percent, with the US producing 6.9 million mt, dropping by 2.3 percent, both year on year. Crude steel output in South America in May amounted to 3.6 million mt, decreasing by 5.2 percent compared to the same month in the previous year, with Brazil’s output totaling 2.8 million mt, falling by 5.5 percent year on year.  

In the given month, Africa produced 1.3 million mt of crude steel, growing by 18.6 percent year on year. In the Middle East, crude steel output totaled 4.4 million mt, moving up by 4.3 percent.
