World crude steel output down 1.5 percent in September

Global crude steel production in September this year decreased by 1.5 percent year on year and was down by 2.2 percent month on month to 149.3 million mt, according to the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

In the January-September period this year, global crude steel production increased by 0.1 percent year on year to 1.41 billion mt. 

In September, crude steel output in Asia amounted to 110.7 million mt, down 2.1 percent, with China’s output at 82.1 million mt, down 5.6 percent, with 7.0 million mt produced by Japan, decreasing by 1.7 percent, 11.6 million mt produced by India, rising by 18.2 percent, and 5.5 million mt produced by South Korea, moving down by 5.9 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis. 

EU-27 countries produced 10.6 million mt of crude steel in September, down by 1.1 percent year on year. In the given period, Germany’s output amounted to 2.9 million mt, up 2.1 percent year on year. 

Turkey produced 2.9 million mt of crude steel in September with an 8.4 percent increase compared to the same month in the previous year. The CIS registered a crude steel output of 7.3 million mt, advancing by 10.7 percent on year-on-year basis, with Russia’s estimated output at 6.2 million mt, up 9.8 percent year on year.

In North America, in September, crude steel output totaled 9.0 million mt, falling by 0.3 percent, with the US producing 6.7 million mt, growing by 2.6 percent, both year on year. Crude steel output in South America in September amounted to 3.4 million mt, decreasing by 3.7 percent compared to the same month in the previous year, with Brazil’s output totaling 2.6 million mt, falling by 5.6 percent year on year.

In the given month, Africa produced 1.3 million mt of crude steel, decreasing by 4.1 percent year on year. In the Middle East, crude steel output totaled 3.6 million mt, moving down by 8.2 percent year on year.
